The Centre for AIDS Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Oxford (CAIRO) is a multidisciplinary and interdivisional initiative. Led by Dr. Lucie Cluver in the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, and Dr. Adrian Smith in the Department of Public Health, CAIRO brings together specialist researchers and students with an interest in HIV/AIDS from across the Social and Medical Sciences Divisions.

The University of Oxford has been the site of several important contributions to the global fight against HIV/AIDS. CAIRO provides an infrastructure that enables better coordination and collaboration between epidemiological, social and behavioural scientists in disparate departments and divisions across the university, and that stimulates innovative interdisciplinary research, as well as teaching, on the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The primary focus of CAIRO is on the epidemiological, social, and behavioural approaches to topics such as HIV/AIDS prevention, and caring for people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA). The centre also has a particular interest in work with understudied groups, such as men who have sex with men (MSM) in sub-Saharan Africa, and children who take care of their AIDS-sick parents.

CAIRO is funded by the John Fell Foundation.

MISSION

CAIRO works to:

(a) Identify and develop interdivisional HIV/AIDS research initiatives between Social and Medical Sciences Divisions, supporting preparation of jointly authored research grant applications and publications;

(b) Facilitate interdisciplinary seminars and workshops for postgraduate students and senior researchers studying HIV/AIDS prevention and policy science, stimulating interdisciplinary collaborative projects.
